HILLTRIBE
GOURMET HONEY
Longan Honey background
The exotic Longan fruit, known as Lomyai
in Thai, is well known and loved by Asian people. The first
Longan trees were brought to Thailand by Chinese merchants
in 1896 and presented to the consort of King Rama IV. Two
were planted in Bangkok, one in Chiang Mai, another in Chiang
Rai and the last in Lumpoon.
The Longan tree is a bushy evergreen that
can reach some 10-20 meters in height. The Longan fruit grows
in clusters hanging from the branches. The white or pinkish
flesh of the fruit is protected by a brittle yet hard outer
shell, which is easily peeled. The taste is succulently sweet
with a distinctive musky flavor. The fruit has a small black
seed - as black as a dragon's eye, hence the fruit's Chinese
name, Longyan, meaning "Dragon's eye." Most Longan
orchards are owned and operated by independent local farmers.
To increase orchard revenues the farmers introduced beehives
amongst their Longan trees.
Production
The Longan tree blooms from January
to March, exhibiting bunches of beautiful, small, round, yellowish-brown
flowers. It is at this time that pollination occurs and the
honey is collected. The honey is then collected from the farmers
and processed in our central production facility, which uses
the most advanced processing machinery and the very highest
quality control standards. Our factory has an export license
issued by the Thai government, so officials inspect it regularly.
During production, to ensure its gourmet
status, the honey is dehydrated of excess water, thus the
remaining honey concentrate is always uniform in its strength,
taste, aroma and consistency.
Medicinal Features
Longan products are well known in the
east for their medicinal benefits. Longan tree bark, prepared
in a tea, is used for the treatment of digestive problems,
while Longan roots are known to promote the healing of bruises
as well as breaking down phlegm for easier expulsion.
